Tiger Woods crashed out of the 2024 Open Championship after carding 14 over during his first two rounds at Royal Troon.

Woods was confident heading into the final major of the year, having made strides with his fitness after missing the cut at the US Open.

There was also optimism from fans and commentators.

YouTube golf star Peter Finch was blown away by Woods’ range sessions, and the 15-time major winner looked sharp in the lead-up to the event.

However, the lack of competitive golf hampered Woods in the testing links conditions. Woods has undergone more surgery since The Open, and it’s now unclear when he will return to full fitness.

What actually happened during Tiger Woods practice round at Royal Troon

The hype around Tiger’s practice perhaps raised expectations a little too much heading into the final major of the year.

But what actually happened during his preparation at the famous Scottish venue?

Michael McEwan from the Bunkered Podcast reveals everything. “It’s funny because at The Open, he stunk the joint out,” McEwan said.

“He was dreadful the two rounds that he played. And yet I watched him on the Sunday before, the day he arrived in Scotland, he went out and played 18 holes. And I followed him around, and he must have made six birdies.

“I thought he hit the ball brilliantly tee to green. He looked fairly comfortable. Yes, there was a tiny bit of a limp, but he looked better than he had been for a long time. So much so that on the security detail, with the guys following him all the way around, one of them broke rank to tell me that he’s playing really, really well.”

When Tiger Woods will play next

Despite not being the force he once was, Woods is undoubtedly still one of the sport’s biggest attractions.

Very few can move the needle in the way Tiger can, so there will always be interest in when he might return.

After the Open, Woods confirmed the Hero World Challenge would be his next outing. However, after his latest surgery, the 15-time major winner’s return to the field seems unlikely.

A confirmed date for the diary is January 14, when Woods will feature in the TGL for the first time. Tiger’s Jupiter Golf Club will take on Collin Morikawa’s Los Angeles GC live on ESPN at 7 p.m. EST.
