After months of planning and talk about if it will ever get off the ground fully, it looks like the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy backed TGL is officially set to get underway.

The indoor league has been set up by the PGA Tour along with Mike McCarley, as well as Woods and McIlroy, and has been in the works for around two years now.

Some of the biggest names in golf are going to be playing as players like Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel join McIlroy, Woods and more for the debut season.

The actual format of the league and how it will work has been shrouded in mystery but it looks like, finally, we’re getting somewhere.

TGL releases official schedule as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods debuts confirmed

In information shared by the Sports Business Journal, the TGL has now released an official schedule of events to begin in January 2025.

However, in a strange twist given their involvement in the game, neither Woods or McIlroy will feature in the opening week’s matches.

Instead, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele’s New York Golf Club will go head to head with Ludvig Aberg and Wyndham Clark’s Bay Golf Club.

Woods will feature in week two, while McIlroy’s Boston Common team will not make their debut until week four.

The format of TGL pits the teams against each other in weekly televised events over 18 virtual holes in a specially built venue.

There is also a custom made short-game area where players will be tested in terms of getting up and down.

TGL might be what the PGA Tour needs

With LIV Golf pinching some of the biggest names in golf and obviously pitting itself towards a younger audience, TGL might be the chance for the PGA to go after a similar demographic.

Quite whether it will work or not, remains to be seen and it could end up being a bit of a novelty that quickly becomes a bit tiresome.

However, if they can get it all to click and it does attract the younger viewer, then it’s very much a win-win for the PGA and all involved.

Not having Tiger or Rory on the debut night does seem a touch odd, though.
