Team USA star Tony Finau has admitted he was surprised by one of Jim Furyk’s Presidents Cup selections as the 2024 event gets underway at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
Finau and Xander Schauffele won the first point for the USA after seeing off Jason Day and Byeong Hun An on the 18th.
Finau has admitted he loves playing with Schauffele, and the 35-year-old played an important role as Furyk’s 12-man United States Team got off to a flying start in Quebec.
Furyk’s decisions appear to be paying off after coming under fire before the event. Finau, however, even admitted he was shocked by one player named among the captain’s picks.

Speaking before Thursday’s opening matches, Finau admitted he was surprised to see Keegan Bradley picked for this weekend’s event.
“Yeah, I would say I was surprised, but as I thought about it, it made a lot of sense,” said Finau. “I definitely was surprised.
“But Keegan’s awesome. He’s going to do a great job. And he’s very passionate about everything he does. There will be no stone left unturned when it comes to him being captain.”
United States in dominant position after Thursday’s Presidents Cup matches
The United States are well on course to win a tenth successive Presidents Cup after a dominant opening day in Montreal.
Schauffele and Finau set the tone before Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley eased out Tom Kim and Sungjae Im.
Given the USA’s strength in foursomes, it’s difficult to envisage Mike Weir’s International Team closing what is already a 5-0 deficit.
There’s certainly a lot for Weir to ponder ahead of Friday’s play getting underway.
