Tommy Fleetwood is the latest European Ryder Cup star to have his say on whether Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton should be part of Luke Donald’s side at Bethpage Black.

The LIV Golf duo are disputing their DP World Tour fines, which accrued during the 2024 season. Currently, breakaway tour players are allowed to return if outstanding sanctions are resolved.

Rahm and Hatton need to participate in DP World Tour events to ensure their eligibility for the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Rahm appealed last week to ensure his spot in three upcoming DP World Tour tournaments, but there’s still doubt over whether the Spaniard will actually be available for the Long Island showdown.

Fleetwood, speaking ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, has now been asked whether the European Ryder Cup authorities should relax the rules so that LIV stars can compete.

Rahm owes over $1 million to the DP World Tour, and Fleetwood believes the European authorities are correct in maintaining their current stance on the matter.

A reporter asked the Olympic silver medalist, “Do you think that the regulations maybe need to be looked at regarding whether you have to be a European Tour Member to be on the Ryder Cup Team?”

Fleetwood replied: “No. I think if you’re going to play tore Team Europe — in my opinion, you should be a member and a part of the Tour in some respect. I’m not saying it has to be necessarily super strict but following the regulations at the moment are the right thing to do.”

LIV Golf make desperate attempt to end DP World Tour sanctions

Unsurprisingly, LIV Golf has made a last-ditch attempt to put an end to the outstanding fines and ensure Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are available for the 2025 Ryder Cup.

However, the DP World Tour declined the offer.

Currently, settling their differences feels like the only way forward if Rahm and Hatton want to participate in the eagerly anticipated Bethpage Black event.

If the current standstill continues, the saga will also spill into the 2025 season, with LIV events once again set to conflict with several DP World Tour tournaments. This will see Rahm and Hatton accrue yet more fines against their names.
