Shane Lowry did not have the performance at the Irish Open that he was looking for, but he remained upbeat afterwards.

The 2009 champion headed into the tournament as arguably the leading favorite to win, besides his good friend Rory McIlroy.

Unfortunately, after a strong start on Thursday, Lowry struggled on the greens and could only get to seven under par.

But even though he was 10 shots behind the leaders, the Irishman thoroughly enjoyed playing in front of his home crowd at The K Club.

Shane Lowry says why the Irish Open crowds are different

Lowry explained after the final round of the Irish Open that he thinks the crowd at the tournament is different from any other.

He even revealed that a Scottish golfer had told him that he was so impressed by the fans at the event.

“No tournaments are like this. The crowds here are just incredible,” Lowry said in an interview at The K Club.

“The Irish people come out and support us, and even, I was talking to one of the Scottish golfers this morning, and he was saying how amazing it is to see the support all the Irish players get this week, even the younger lads.

“It’s been a great week, but obviously I would have liked to have finished better.”

While Lowry greatly appreciates the fans, he also hopes that they know “how lucky” they are to have some top Irish players to root for.

“The support we get here is amazing,” he continued. “The Irish crowds are really great, and I just hope they realize how lucky we are to have Rory McIlroy and me doing well in the world of golf, and Padraig Harrington achieving what he has done, and all of the lads who have gone before us.”

Shane Lowry has a point to prove at the BMW PGA Championship

Lowry’s selection for the European Ryder Cup team was never in doubt; he only missed out on automatic qualification by a handful of points.

However, what remains up for debate is the importance of Lowry’s role at Bethpage Black later this month.

Everyone expects Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Tommy Fleetwood to have at least four matches, and Lowry will want to be in that group, too.

The Irishman has proved multiple times that he has the requisite passion to succeed in the Ryder Cup, but is his game where it needs to be?

With a better performance at the BMW PGA Championship than at the Irish Open, Lowry can prove to captain Luke Donald that he should be one of the main men in New York.
