Rory McIlroy won the Irish Open in front of a raucous home crowd and he’s now posted on social media after getting over the line.

McIlroy’s playoff win over Joakim Lagergren was one of the most dramatic moments of the golfing season.

McIlroy’s stunning putt on 18 to bring him level was amazing but while the scenes on the 18th green were a joy to witness, things got even better when he finally saw off Lagergren after three gruelling playoff holes.

The fans went wild for McIlroy and he lapped up the adulation as he made his way to collect his trophy.

Now, taking to social media to pay tribute to his support, an emotional McIlroy has posted some words of his own in their direction.

Rory McIlroy sends message to the fans after winning The Irish Open

Rory McIlroy is always a player who wears his heart on his sleeve so to win in Ireland will be something he truly does cherish.

McIlroy is always keen to win not only on the DP World Tour but also in the countries he considers home.

Doing it in Ireland, then, will be massive for him and after being roared on by a quite mesmerising crowd at the K Club, McIlroy has now taken to X to share his feelings.

What Joakim Lagergren said after losing to Rory McIlroy

With the joy clear for all to see for McIlroy, we have to remember there was a loser in all this in the form of Swedish star, Joakim Lagergren.

Lagergren pushed McIlroy all the way and would have won but for the Northern Irishman’s stunning eagle on 18.

Indeed, despite pushing McIlroy so far, Lagergren admitted he was still bitterly disappointed not to win.

“This is a tough one to swallow,” Lagergren told the media. “I really thought I had that out there today. Obviously, posting minus 17 going into the clubhouse could have been enough.

“Played really good in the playoff as well. Hit a solid 5-iron down on the last play, but it got a horrendous bounce. It’s a metre from being dead to the hole. So it’s tough.”

Having not won on the DP World Tour since 2018, this will feel like one that has got away for the Swede.
