Rory McIlroy will be Luke Donald’s ‘on-field leader’, so to speak, during the Ryder Cup later this month at Bethpage Black.

Just like Luke Donald before him, McIlroy has made no secret of his passion for the Ryder Cup, and he will be extremely keen to get started at Bethpage Black.

The Northern Irishman has a history of riling up golf fans from the United States, going back to 2016 during his hotly-contested match against Patrick Reed at Hazeltine.

And he has been chirping away at the Americans for the past two years now. Back in 2023 after Europe’s success in Rome, McIlroy insisted that he and his teammates would win the Ryder Cup at Bethpage in 2025.

And McIlroy incurred the wrath of US Ryder Cup Keegan Bradley last month by suggesting that acting as a playing captain would not be possible.

The Masters champion seemingly has the bit between his teeth and is quite obviously raring to go at Bethpage Black.

However, his latest comments could well be seen as yet another motivational tool for the Americans.

Luke Donald may be cringing after Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup statement

McIlroy has sent a message to the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team ahead of their showdown with the United States at Cypress Point in California.

The Northern Irishman said: “As someone who played a Walker Cup and wasn’t able to quite get it done, and then to go on to play Ryder Cups and be able to beat the Yanks in their own backyard, nothing feels better.

“Please beat them because I know we’re going to beat them at Bethpage,” McIlroy said.

You have to admire the confidence but the wisdom of those comments is questionable to say the least.

Donald will surely not want any of his players fanning the flames ahead of what will already be a hostile atmosphere at Bethpage for the visiting team.

The last thing the Europeans need to do is motivate the United States team even more.

Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is already an incredibly difficult thing to do.

And McIlroy’s comments were simply unnecessary.

How Keegan Bradley responded to Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup claim from 2023

Bradley is well known for never shirking confrontation. In fact, he is exactly the kind of captain team USA needed this year, with the vociferous crowds set to turn Bethpage into an absolute cauldron of noise.

During an interview conducted by Colt Knost, Bradley was reminded of McIlroy’s comments in Rome back in 2023.

Knost said: Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is very difficult, it hasn’t been done since 2012. After the last Ryder Cup in Rome, Rory McIlroy had some very interesting comments about that.

Then Knost played McIlroy’s quote to the Ryder Cup captain: I’ve said this for probably six or seven years to anyone who will listen, I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf is winning an away Ryder Cup and that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.

Bradley replied: The boys have seen that clip a few times, yeah. Yeah, they may have seen it once or twice, yeah.

McIlroy may well end up looking like a genius if Europe manage to win the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

However, one thing he has definitely done is pile the pressure on himself and his teammates ahead of the competition and Donald surely won’t be happy about that.
