Shane Lowry was one of the leading contenders to win the Irish Open at The K Club this week.

The Irishman won the tournament as an amateur in 2009 and was determined to join Jon Rahm and Ian Woosnam as a two-time champion.

Unfortunately, Lowry did not have his A-game at The K Club and was not really in contention at all over the weekend.

He explained after the final round of the Irish Open that he has mixed feelings about his performance.

Shane Lowry ‘disappointed’ after Irish Open final round

Lowry has not won on the DP World Tour in three years, but he was still one of the favorites at the Irish Open.

He has had another solid season on the PGA Tour and wanted to build confidence ahead of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

However, after an impressive first round, Lowry finished the tournament at seven under par and a long way behind the lead.

“I putted nicely today again. I mean, the weather was a bit miserable out there for a while,” he said.

“It was hard, like the golf course played long. I don’t know, it was just hard. It was a grind for the most part. I felt like I played nicely.

“Yeah, 71, I probably should have… you know, could have done a few better in the end, but that’s the way it’s been all week.

“I feel like 7-under for the tournament is probably by far the worst score I could be standing here. So a little disappointed, but what can you do? I tried my best, and that’s it.

Still, Lowry remains upbeat about his game heading into the BMW PGA Championship next week.

“So many positives to take away from this week. I’m happy going into Wentworth next week,” the 38-year-old added.

“I’ll figure out my putting in the next few days, and I’ll be all right. I’ll give it a run next week at Wentworth.”

Shane Lowry ‘proud’ of how he dealt with pressure at Irish Open

Lowry admitted after the final round at the Irish Open that he finds it “hard” to deal with the “outside noise”.

He feels extra “pressure” to perform well at his home open, which can be a distraction, but he is pleased with how he dealt with it at The K Club.

“Yeah, it’s all about building towards [the Ryder Cup] as well,” Lowry continued. “Things are going well. I feel like I’m in a nice place. I feel like the next two weeks are important in the buildup to the Ryder Cup, but I feel like I’ll be ready to go at Bethpage.

“This week, a little bit of pressure and a little bit of outside noise for me this week. It’s kind of hard sometimes. Even though I’ve played in so many Irish Opens, it can be hard sometimes, and I feel like I handle a lot of it really well.

“I’m pretty proud of myself, pretty happy that way, but obviously I would have liked to have been higher up the leaderboard and given it a run, but it is what it is.”
