Shane Lowry is still just about in contention after two rounds of the Irish Open, but he couldn’t hide his disappointment after his second round 71 at The K Club.
Lowry sits at four-under par heading into the weekend at the Irish Open, and faces the daunting task of attempting to make up an eight-shot deficit on the leader, Joakim Lagergren.
While the Irishman was nowhere near his best at The K Club on Friday, at least he didn’t shoot himself out of the tournament.
Lowry has a new driver in play at the Irish Open this week, and it has worked incredibly well so far.
However, the 38-year-old needs to improve upon his iron play, if he is to have any chance whatsoever of winning his national open.
It has been a strange season for the Irishman, with no wins to his name so far. Lowry actually missed out on automatic qualification for the Ryder Cup, but he received a captain’s pick from Luke Donald, so he will be at Bethpage Black later this month.
And he will be desperate to rediscover his best form ahead of the showdown with the United States in New York.
Shane Lowry says something ‘weird’ happened during round two at the Irish Open
The 2019 Open champion cut a frustrated figure out on the golf course during his second round on Friday.
Lowry was asked to provide an assessment of his second round 71 at The K Club on Friday.

“Oh, yeah, it’s just one of those days,“ the Irishman said. “I feel like I hit the ball really well obviously off the tee. Then it was just weird, I don’t know, my iron play was a little poor. Then I was sloppy and I missed the green. I missed a couple early on at the start. I missed a couple of greens on the wrong side, and before you know it, you’re a couple over and you’re fighting.
“I’m proud of the way I battled back going into the back nine. The last place you want to be is 1-under par for the tournament playing 16, 17, 18 where the trouble is waiting. So I felt like I did very well to get my round back together.
“Yeah, it’s kind of a what could have been round. It could have been a lot better. But that’s golf. That’s the way it is. Live to play another day.“
Lowry has always been one of the most honest players on tour, and he knows full well he needs to up his game over the next two days.
Shane Lowry’s stats from round two of the Irish Open
Lowry has been nowhere near his best in his homeland this week.
And his stats from day two at The K Club highlight just how much he needs to sharpen up with the Ryder Cup on the horizon.
| Stats | Round 2 rank |
| Driving accuracy | 40 |
| Driving distance | 51 |
| Greens in regulation | 75 |
| Putts per GIR | 81 |
| Scrambling | 137 |
When you look at those stats, 71 actually seems like a really good score. It really could have been a lot worse for Lowry on day two of the Irish Open.
It must be said, those driving stats are a little harsh on him as he missed a few fairways by only a yard or so.
Lowry will obviously have to tidy up all parts of his game aside from his driving, if he is to have any chance of winning the Irish Open on Sunday.
