Patrick Cantlay couldn’t escape the tussle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf as he prepares to play at the Presidents Cup.

Cantlay has an ongoing battle with Xander Schauffele, but the pair will now be on the same team at the Presidents Cup.

Both Cantlay and Schauffele are among those to have qualified automatically for the US Team in Canada this week.

Cantlay’s favourite course is The Riviera, but he must now take on Royal Montreal alongside his compatriots and international opponents.

It is certain to be an exciting event, with plenty of pride at stake for the players and captains Jim Furyk and Mike Weir.

Patrick Cantlay names ideal outcome between PGA Tour and LIV Golf

Cantlay was, however, asked in his Presidents Cup press conference about the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF, which funds the breakaway LIV Golf tour.

“Haven’t had one in a little bit, but hope they’re making good progress, and if it’s the best possible future for the Tour, then I’m supportive.”

Will the PGA Tour and LIV Golf reach a positive outcome?

For those playing the game and indeed those watching on, the negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been going on for far too long.

And it still remains to be seen what outcome, if any, will be reached between the traditional tour and the breakaway one.

Neither side looks like backing down anytime soon, although positive steps were made with the signing of a framework agreement last summer.

That is seemingly still being discussed, with the powers that be really needing to take decisive action for the good of golf.

Players may have different opinions on the issue, but hopefully there is now light at the end of the tunnel after the PIF and PGA Tour talks earlier this month.
