Shane Lowry has had a US Open to forget, with the Irishman missing the cut by some margin at Oakmont.
Golf fans criticised Lowry for an outburst during his first round of the US Open, in which he carded a nine-over 79.
Those struggles and indeed his frustrations continued into his second round, where Lowry posted a 78 to finish on 17-over.
Bryson DeChambeau named Oakmont his most difficult course, and many players could leave Pennsylvania this week with the same opinion.
LIV Golf star DeChambeau also missed the cut at the US Open, with the defending champion joined by the likes of Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg.

What Shane Lowry’s caddie said when he mistakenly picked up his ball at the US Open
Lowry’s playing partner Justin Rose also failed to make the weekend, with the Englishman having had a front row seat for the Irishman’s nightmare week.
It culminated in Lowry picking up his ball on the 14th green without marking it, a situation he explained afterwards.

“Yeah, probably one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done,” he said. “I just picked the ball up, had the ball in my hand, turned around to Darren [Reynolds] and he said to me ‘What you doing?’
“And yeah I put it back down and marked it and played on, then I knew I was going to get penalised, didn’t know if it was going to be one or two.
“Maybe I was just… my mind was somewhere else. But I fought like, I still tried, I fought over every shot. I still tried over every shot. That’s all you can do as far as a week like this.”
Shane Lowry scoring stats from US Open nightmare at Oakmont
Even though he fought for every shot and indeed managed to see the funny side of his shocking error, Lowry will undoubtedly want to put his US Open nightmare behind him as soon as possible.
He will, however, be able to take comfort from the fact that a long, long list of high-profile players also really struggled at Oakmont, while his error certainly wasn’t a costly one.
His other playing partner and close friend Rory McIlroy meanwhile only just made the cut, with the five-time major champion having also been left extremely frustrated during his time in Pennsylvania thus far.
Still, Lowry would have been eager to produce a strong showing at the US Open, but his search for a second major championship win now continues elsewhere.
| Round one | Round two | |
| Eagles | 1 | 0 |
| Birdies | 0 | 1 |
| Pars | 9 | 10 |
| Bogeys | 5 | 5 |
| Double bogeys | 3 | 2 |
He won The Open Championship in 2019, and has impressed this season with two runner-up places on the PGA Tour.
But Lowry has been brought crashing back down to earth with a reality check at Oakmont, with both his game and his emotions perhaps needing to be evaluated before he returns to the course.
