Scottie Scheffler solidified his standing as the world’s best player with his remarkable PGA Championship victory on Sunday.

Scheffler’s 2024 season was up there with the greatest in history, so he clearly proved to be the number one golfer on the planet.

However, Rory McIlroy bounced back earlier this year with Signature Event wins at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Players Championship, followed by The Masters.

The Northern Irishman had a strong case to have overtaken Scheffler, but that has just been cast aside at the PGA Championship.

Plus, the American’s three major championship victories mean he’s already an all-time great on the PGA Tour. Indeed, Wayne Riley just compared Scheffler to another golf legend.

Wayne Riley compares Scottie Scheffler to PGA Tour legend

Scheffler’s world-class ability and stoic personality on the golf course are fairly unique, except Riley thinks one former PGA Tour player was similar.

He compared Scheffler to two-time Masters champion and former world number one Bernhard Langer amid glowing praise of his PGA Championship performance.

“The last two days, he has been sensational. He does exactly what he needs to do,” Riley said on Sky Sports Golf.

“He plots his way around the golf course, and when he gets in trouble or gets it out of position, his chipping is sensational, and he can putt as well.

“He is a seriously good player. I have never seen a demeanour such as his on a golf course, playing with people, or walking the golf course.

“It is reminiscent of the great Bernhard Langer the way he goes about it. It’s Bjorn Borg ice man stuff.”

Scottie Scheffler now has more majors than Bernhard Langer and many other golf legends

Scheffler overtook many past and present golf legends with his third major championship victory at Quail Hollow on Sunday.

Indeed, he surpassed current PGA Tour stars Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas, and LIV golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm.

Some high-profile former players, like Langer, Greg Norman and John Daly, were also only able to capture two major wins in their careers.

Greg Norman2 (2x Open Championship)
John Daly2 (Open Championship and US Open)

The question now is: how many majors will Scheffler finish with? There’s also talk about whether he will become the next man to complete the career Grand Slam.

There are no guarantees in golf, but it’s almost impossible to imagine Scheffler not at least doubling his tally if his current dominance continues.
