Shane Lowry had a US Open to forget at Oakmont Country Club, where the one-time major champion failed to make the cut.

The Irishman endured a hugely frustrating week at the US Open, which involved Lowry lifting his ball without marking it during his second round.

He finished on 17-over after two rounds in Pennsylvania, with Lowry posting scores of 79 and 78 on Thursday and Friday respectively.

The 38-year-old found himself well below the cut line and well behind leader Sam Burns, who was one of just three players under par heading into the weekend.

Lowry received heavy criticism from fans on day one of the tournament, with his emotions having boiled over on more than one occasion at Oakmont.

But the three-time PGA Tour winner has since taken to social media to defend his actions, with Lowry unapologetic for his behaviour on the course.

He wrote on X: “Never nice heading home early on major weekends. My game was in good shape heading into Oakmont but that’s golf sometimes.

“I gave it my all on every shot and that’s all I can ask. I play with my heart on my sleeve. I’ve always been a fiery and passionate player and I’ll continue to be. It’s who I am and how I got here.”

Lowry was right to be confident of his chances heading into Oakmont, but perhaps he underestimated the task at hand.

A long list of his fellow stars failed to deal with the challenging course early on, with his fellow Europeans Justin Rose and Ludvig Aberg among the high-profile players to have also missed the cut.

Lowry is yet to win on the PGA Tour in 2025, but he had missed just two cuts from his 14 appearances prior to the US Open.

More importantly, the Irishman had posted two runner-up finishes and four top 10 finishes before going to Pennsylvania.

He did, however, also fail to make the weekend at the PGA Championship, a scenario he will be desperate to avoid at The Open Championship.

Winner of the major in 2019, Lowry will be keen to end his 2025 major season on a high, particularly given the event is taking place just across the border from his native Ireland in Northern Ireland.
