Rex Hoggard left shocked by what Scottie Scheffler did at the PGA Championship which reminded him of Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan

Scottie Scheffler is the new champion of the PGA Championship, winning by a five-shot margin at Quail Hollow.

Scheffler held a three-shot lead after 54 holes in North Carolina, and held off many high-profile names to lift the trophy.

Justin Thomas has congratulated Scheffler following his PGA Championship win, which represents the third major success of his career.

The world number one is now a 15-time PGA Tour champion, having entered the latest major of the season on the back of a win at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

Phil Mickelson has labelled Scheffler’s performance ‘incredible’, with the LIV Golf icon having missed the cut at Quail Hollow.

And Rex Hoggard has also shared his take on the display, saying on the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav: “I will go back to the idea to the conversation that we were probably having no fewer than five weeks ago, maybe even less than that.

“The what is wrong with Scottie Scheffler. I don’t think you and I engaged with that but there were plenty of the media who did because he had not won on the PGA Tour.

“I think my argument and your argument at the time was that I think his worst finish before that was outside the top 20 in Phoenix.

“If that was rock bottom I think okay everything is going to be fine. I am taken by the idea that here is a man who does not seem to be influenced by the outside world one way or the other. Who wants to keep his insular world as insular as physically possible.

“He has his circle and that is going to be it and he is going to be working on that game and becoming brilliant at it, playing that game and being brilliant at it, or he is going to be at home surrounded by that small circle.

“If you listen to him tonight, surrounded by the media, the idea that he was motivated by all of those questions and those in the media who questioned him – because he gets to this spot and I think the equivalency here was Rory McIlroy and Rory not having a great week.

“You almost saw Scottie go back to the idea of I don’t understand why you do that. I could miss the cut at Colonial next week and suddenly you are going to be asking what is wrong with Scottie Scheffler. Very reactionary. I guess the part which shocks me is that he takes it to heart. He uses it as fuel.

“I would equate him when it comes to mentality of an athlete like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods, where you use the tiniest of slights and dig through that and make sure you can use that to fire you up to do the next thing.”

Scheffler quietly went about his world-class business in the early stages at Quail Hollow, carding rounds of 69 and 68 as many others struggled.

He also had his difficulties, particularly because of the weather in North Carolina, but really moved into contention after a third round 65.

A final round even-par 71 was then enough to secure the title, and follows his wins at The Masters in 2022 and 2024.

After a disrupted start to the season due to injury, the American has once again truly cemented his status as the world’s number one golfer.
