Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Championship with ease at Quail Hollow and Phil Mickelson has sent the world number one a message and completed a clear U-turn in the process.
Scheffler produced a masterclass back nine after coming out of the blocks slowly to fight off the competition and win his third major of his career and a first PGA Championship.
After moving into the lead on Saturday, anything but a win would have been a surprise and Scheffler delivered with aplomb.
Indeed, in doing so, he’s cemented himself once more as the world’s best player and over on social media, Phil Mickelson appears to have conceded that is the case.

While a message from a legend like Mickelson to a player like Scheffler when winning a major is not news in itself, this one happens to have more history.
It was only earlier this year that Mickelson claimed Joaquin Niemann was the best player in the world but that theory has now been firmly put to bed.
Furthermore, Mickelson also wildly claimed that Scheffler wouldn’t win before the Ryder Cup in September.
Now, though, Mickelson has back-tracked as he posted his message of congratulations to Scheffler on X.
As the stats and the OWGR shows, Scheffler is very much the best player going right now and ultimately, Mickelson has been proven well wrong.

Sometimes in golf, you just have to take your hat off to the best player in the field and Scottie Scheffler hasn’t let anyone get a sniff this week at the PGA.
After going ahead on day three, there was just no way Scheffler was letting it go.
In fact, even when Jon Rahm pulled level on the front nine, Scheffler simply regrouped and then pummelled his shot on ten down the fairway and never looked back.
As world number one, he is proving time and time again why he is very much the man in golf right now.
As for everyone else, they simply have to get better and try to keep up. And as for Phil Mickelson, well, he needs to get better at his predictions!
