When you think about Scottie Scheffler, you think about a player winning golf tournaments with regularity. Unless, it seems, you’re Phil Mickelson.
Scheffler won nine times in 2024 to complete a stunning year as the accolades and comparisons to Tiger Woods flowed in for him.
Still the world number one, Scheffler is very much bubbling under the radar so far in 2025 and is playing fairly well without really challenging for wins.

With major season upon us in the next months, Scheffler will be hoping he peaks at the right time and then continues that form into the Ryder Cup.
However, when it comes to winning golf tournaments, Phil Mickelson has made a hugely controversial prediction about Scheffler.

Mickelson is becoming ever more open with his comments on social media and after Mickelson named Joaquin Niemann as the best player in golf right now, he’s now posted again.
Taking to X to deliver a ‘hot take’, Mickelson has controversially suggested that Scottie Scheffler WILL NOT win a golf tournament before the Ryder Cup in September.
With Mickelson posting not long after that he was ‘just having a little fun’, he’s clearly made the comment knowing it would gain traction online.
Quite whether it does happen, though, is something only time will tell.

With Mickelson making such a big call here, there was always going to be plenty of replies and opinions from golf fans and that’s exactly what happened.
However, in the main, fans were a touch perplexed as they disagreed with ‘Lefty’.
One fan used their opportunity to name Scheffler and others as being better than any LIV player.
“Scottie the best player by a mile. Rory, Aberg and Zander all significantly better than anyone on Liv.”
While another fan even offered to take Mickelson up on a wager, such was his confidence that Scheffler would win.
“Phil, love you man, but I can’t help myself. I’ll give you +200 odds in that bet. Any win before the Ryder Cup and I win, otherwise you win.”
In a bit more of a bitter turn, one fan called Mickelson out completely.
“When did Phil turn into such dumb—? Imagine not seeing what Scottie has done over the last year and acting like there’s another human on the planet touching his level of golf”
While another fan suggested these sorts of comment from Mickelson will harm his own Ryder Cup hopes.
“Phil – these type of comments and stances will not help your chances of ever being a Ryder Cup Captain, which at this rate might be for the best. Blatantly hating on the best player in the world who is American”
Still, there was some small support for Mickelson, with one fan claiming he might be seeing something the normal fans aren’t.
“Seems like a crazy bet to me, but then again I don’t play golf for a living so maybe you see something we are missing.”
With Scheffler being so successful, it seems amazing to imagine him not picking up a win prior to September.
Indeed, if he hasn’t, then it suggests something has gone drastically wrong in his golf game.
