Scottie Scheffler is the clear favourite to seal the FedEx Cup title at the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake.

The world number one has been simply sensational since the turn of the year and landed his first Olympic title at Le Golf National last weekend.

Scheffler’s form has led the likes of Rick Shiels to claim he’s had a better season than Xander Schauffele, despite the world number two landing two major titles.

The 28-year-old has bagged over $38 million thanks to his efforts and could be set to boost his earnings in Atlanta. However, there’s one red-hot PGA Tour star who could prove a shock threat to Scheffler when the end-of-season finale gets underway.

Billy Horschel’s recent form needs to be talked about. The American came within touching distance of his first major championship title at The Open, and the 37-year-old is firmly in contention at this weekend’s Wyndham Championship.

The American currently sits 27th in the FedEx Cup standings but is projected to rise to 14th ahead of the first playoff event.

Horschel is clearly in good form and enjoying his golf. As Viktor Hovland showed last year, the playoffs reward those who hit top form at the right time, and Horschel could be set to do just that.

Having one eight times previously, the American knows what is needed to secure victory on the PGA Tour and could undoubtedly be one for Scheffler to keep a close eye on throughout August.

Billy Horschel has already tasted victory in 2024

Horschel landed his eighth PGA Tour victory at the Corales Puntacana Championship back in April but saw his form take a downward turn during the middle of the season.

He missed the cut at the Zurich Classic before finishing well out of contention at the Wells Fargo Championship. However, Horschel’s major championship form has proved eye-catching in 2024.

The American didn’t feature at The Masters, but since then, Horschel placed T8 at the PGA Championship, T41 at the US Open and T2 at The Open.

Clearly, he’s enjoying the biggest events and could thrive in the highly pressurised conditions that will present themselves during the FedEx Cup playoffs.
