Scottie Scheffler’s Olympic gold medal has seen the Player of the Year debate thrust into headlines once more, and YouTube golf star Rick Shiels has shared his thoughts.

Of course, two-time major winner Xander Schauffele is also at the forefront of the discourse. Golf commentator Smylie Kaufman has claimed several players would prefer Schauffele’s 2024 on their resumes.

Golf fans have also commented on the Scheffler vs Schauffele debate, with many split on who has enjoyed a better season.

Shiels has now claimed there is a clear winner, irrespective of last week’s Olympic golf event at Le Golf National.

Speaking on the latest Rick Shiels Golf Show, the YouTube star claimed that Scheffler’s season is the standout, regardless of Schauffele’s success in the majors.

“I think Scottie has had a much better year, even without the gold medal,” said Shiels. “I do. He has won some of the most incredible golf events. But you are right; you are going to measure your success on majors.”

Shiels added: “I think if Scottie hadn’t won majors, but Scottie has already won a decent amount, he has been so dominant. It’s absolutely crazy.”

Scottie Scheffler on course to reach ten victories in 2024

With three PGA Tour playoff events still to come and Scheffler’s participation confirmed, there’s every chance of the world number one finishing the season with a remarkable ten victories.

Given his current form and ability to avoid bogeys, it’s hard to envisage anyone getting close to the American over the next three weeks. The Tour Championship feels destined to end up in his grasp, and it’s hard to argue against the world number one being 100 per cent deserving.

When looking at who could potentially challenge Scheffler at East Lake, Schauffele is an obvious candidate, as is Rory McIlroy, should he regain some form.

The Northern Irishman hasn’t looked comfortable since the US Open and will welcome the return to traditional US-style conditions during August.
