Xander Schauffele won his second major of the year this weekend at Royal Troon and golf fans have been considering whether his year is now better than Scottie Scheffler’s.

Schauffele has gone from being golf’s nearly man to being the winner of two majors having succeeded at both the PGA and now The Open.

Remarkably though, those are Schauffele’s only two wins of the year, albeit he did come second at both The Players and the Wells Fargo.

Scheffler, of course, has had a year to remember as he’s become the dominant force on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler got himself another Masters win back in April, while a remarkable run of form saw him win The Players, The Arnold Palmer, the RBC Heritage, and The Memorial Tournament, while he’s also failed to miss a cut all season as well.

Further, Scheffler was well in contention this week at The Open as well but fell away after a few errant shots cost him, despite a remarkable 3-wood showing his class on Saturday at the par three.

Of course, with Scheffler number one in the world, Rory McIlroy struggling for form, and Schauffele now overtaking the Northern Irishman in second spot, the debate has started over just who is the better golfer out of Scheffler and Schauffele.

And over on social media platform X, the debate is rife, with plenty of opinions on just who has had the best 2024.

Golf fans can’t decide who’s had the better 2024 out of Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele

Like most debates on social media, there is plenty of shouts for both sides on this one.

Making the case for Scheffler, plenty of golf fans point to the fact that the sheer amount of wins means he’s the man.

While @Sneakyben commented that the stats back up Scheffler as being the top dog.

“It’s still Scottie. 6 wins this year including the Masters, Players, and Memorial. 1st in strokes gained. He’s been the best player in the world”

However, there is more than a fair argument to be had for Schauffele and a number of fans pointed out to the fact that a lot of golfers would take two majors over the rest.

Mitch on X: “@NUCLRGOLF Two majors, one season. Case closed. It’s X all day. Scottie won a major, great, but a bunch of sig events that mean zero.” / X

@Danya_mcc then made the point over trading other wins for majors, and suggested Scheffler would definitely swap.

“If Masters and Open cancel each other out would you trade the PGA Championship (major) for”

“Palmer Invitational, Players Champ, RBC heritage, Memorial and Travelers. I think Scotty would especially cause he’s got 2 green jackets no other majors.”

It seems, then, that both players here can make a strong case and that fans agree and that’s something Justin Rose discussed last night as well.

18 hole play-off, anyone?
