Predictions
The Golfing Gazette writers predict who they think will walk away with the gold, silver and bronze medals:
Sam Stone: Gold – Xander Schauffele (USA), Silver – Scottie Scheffler (USA), Bronze – Tommy Fleetwood (Great Britain)
“The USA are the clear favourites here, and it’s easy to see why. Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler are the best players on the planet, and it’s hard to envisage anyone coming close at Le Golf National.
“After Scheffler claimed the course was soft and rough relatively kind, conditions could be well suited to the traditional American player. I am going to back Schauffele to land gold, Scheffler silver and Tommy Fleetwood to steal a bronze.
“The Englishman won all four of his matches during the 2018 Ryder Cup and could be well-suited to the course at Le Golf National.”
Jordan Harris: Gold – Xander Schauffele (USA), Silver – Adrian Meronk (Poland), Bronze – Guido Migliozzi (Italy)
“It feels like a flip of the coin for whether Xander Schauffele or Scottie Scheffler win the gold medal, but Schauffele gets the nod based on him winning in Tokyo three years ago.
“Of course, it could well be an American clean sweep in the men’s event, but where is the fun in predicting that? Adrian Meronk finished tied for 11th at Le Golf National in 2022 and has had a sneakily good season on LIV.
“Guido Migliozzi is not one of the biggest names in the field by any means, but he won around Le Golf National in 2022 and sits 10th on the Race to Dubai this year.”
Peter Lynch: Gold – Matthieu Pavon (France), Silver – Ludvig Aberg (Sweden), Bronze – Tommy Fleetwood (Great Britain)
“While Team USA stars Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele will be hard to beat given their form this season, I’m backing Matthieu Pavon to bask in the home support and clinch gold for host nation France.
“Unlike the Frenchman, Ludvig Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood are yet to taste success in 2024. Both are due victories, but I think they’ll just come up short, with the former taking home silver and the latter winning bronze.”
