Mike Weir’s International Team face an uphill task at the Presidents Cup after losing all five fourball matches on Thursday.

The United States were dominant throughout and quietened the atmosphere at Royal Montreal Golf Club. After losing to Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley, Tom Kim admitted he was disappointed with the Canadian support.

The South Korean’s match against the world number one had plenty of needle, although Scheffler downplayed the back and forth between the pair upon the close of play.

Kim and Min Woo Lee will now sit out the foursomes, and Weir has detailed his thought process.

The International Team captain has insisted Kim’s omission was always pre-planned.

“That was part of the plan. It was not a change after anything,” Weir revealed. “We had a plan for fourball and foursomes.”

The Canadian added: “Tom wasn’t on the plan for today, but that doesn’t mean he might not be down the road. We are sticking to the plan.”

Tom Kim Presidents Cup decision could be an error from Mike Weir

Weir’s decision to rest Kim and Woo Lee feels slightly bizarre. With the International Team in need of a spark, the Canadian has opted to rest his two most energetic players.

Kim attempted to get the crowd going at times, and Woo Lee is more than capable of producing a hot streak.

With Furyk opting to reunite Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay and maintaining the Scheffler-Henley pairing, Weir’s side will need to produce something remarkable to win the foursomes and maintain hope of ending the USA’s Presidents Cup dominance.
