Jordan Spieth’s return to form was a welcome sight for everyone who follows the PGA Tour as the three-time major winner came within touching distance at the WM Phoenix Open.
The 31-year-old played well all weekend but couldn’t quite reel in Thomas Detry, who won his first ever PGA Tour event and in doing so became the first Belgian to win on the TOUR.
Spieth has not won since 2022 and both he and good friend Justin Thomas showed signs of recovery at TPC Scottsdale.
Spieth produced some fine golf, with Billy Horschel among those to sing Spieth’s praises after he made an unimaginable par late in the day.
However, it wasn’t just Horschel who was impressed with Spieth, as runner-up Michael Kim took to social media to explain Spieth’s brilliance.

Michael Kim so impressed by seeing Jordan Spieth up close
One of the most impressive aspects of Jordan Spieth’s game when he’s on song is his putting.
Spieth was almost unstoppable with the flat-stick in his dominant 2015 year and after producing some good moments on the greens at the WM Open, Michael Kim has explained what it’s like to see up close.
“I wish I could better describe what it’s like watching Jordan Spieth’s ball roll on the green. It’s like his golf ball has eyes and it’s actively trying to go in the hole haha,” Kim wrote.
“It’s fun to watch him golf as you never know what you’re going to get. That par on 11 was dirty but Mav and I were on the side talking about how this would be the most Spieth par before he hit his 3rd… and of course he made par. Maverick also can really roll it. A bit more drippy speed with him.”
Jordan Spieth told his putting is not what is used to be
While Kim was impressed with Spieth in Phoenix, one man who suggested Spieth is still not back to his very best was experienced caddie, Billy Foster.
The Englishman was on Sky Sports at the time and Foster admitted the Spieth of old would have given Detry a tougher time.
“The Spieth of old, he’s just played the two par 5s and not made birdies,” Foster commented.
“The Jordan of old would be 18 under by now and putting the heat on Detry but luckily for Thomas, he’s not quite the putter he once was.”
| Strokes gained category | Jordan Spieth’s 2024 PGA Tour rank |
| Off the tee | 15th |
| Tee to green | 71st |
| Approach play | 138th |
| Around the green | 108th |
| Putting | 101st |
| Total | 80th |
Still, despite not being quite at his absolute best, it does look like Spieth is getting back to where he wants to be for and for the game of golf, that can only be a good thing.
