The American quartet Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth are some of the first names to come off the tongue when you start to name top American PGA Tour stars but there is s stark observation when it comes to their recent records.
Of the four, Morikawa, Thomas and Spieth have all won majors more than once, while Patrick Cantlay was a star man on the US Ryder Cup team in 2023 and is very much Mr Consistency.
The successes of those major wins is nothing to be shunned and on any given day, all four are capable of winning any golf tournament in the world.
However, being capable of and actually winning are two different things. And it’s safe to say all four players here have struggled in recent times.

Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth approaching three years without a win
While 2024 can be put down as a bit of an outlier given how Scottie Scheffler dominated, it’s actually quite remarkable how far back we have to go to find a win for his Team USA teammates.
For Jordan Spieth, it’s been a painful few years with a wrist injury hampering his progress and his last win came back in April 2022, when he won the RBC Heritage, coincidentally, ahead of Cantlay.
Spieth’s good friend Justin Thomas has also struggled, with his last win coming the same year, albeit he did manage to make sure it was the PGA Championship.
As for Cantlay, the only one of the four yet to win a major, he also has to go back to 2022 for a win, with the BMW Championship his only success.
Finally, two-time major winner Collin Morikawa won the ZOZO in 2023 but aside from that, he has to back even further, with his last win prior to that being The Open in 2021.
Ryder Cup year could be crucial for four of golf’s biggest names
While the reading here on Thomas, Spieth, Cantlay and Morikawa is pretty dismal, 2025 is a Ryder Cup year and that could bring out the best in these players.
Of those four, only Morikawa appears a certain choice for the Ryder Cup, sitting fourth in the current standings.
| Year | Edition | Hosts | Course | Location | Last hosted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 45th | United States | Bethpage Black Course, | Farmingdale, New York, United States | n/a |
| 2027 | 46th | Europe | Adare Manor | Adare, County Limerick, Ireland | n/a |
| 2029 | 47th | United States | Hazeltine National Golf Club | Chaska, Minnesota, United States | 2016 |
| 2031 | 48th | Europe | Camiral Golf and Wellness | Barcelona, Spain | n/a |
| 2033 | 49th | United States | Olympic Club, Lake Course | San Francisco, California, United States | n/a |
| 2035 | 50th | Europe | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| 2037 | 51st | United States | Congressional Country Club, Blue Course | Bethesda, Maryland, United States | n/a |
Patrick Cantlay can still automatically get in there, given he sits just outside the top six in seventh.
The picture for Thomas and Spieth looks a touch bleaker. Thomas is down in 12th and will need a captain’s pick unless he can really turn it on, while Spieth – having not played since late 2024 due to injury until now – is way down in 65th.
Sooner or later, these players will kick into gear but right now, it looks like their best years could already behind them.
