It was a memorable day for Englishman Matt Wallace today as he finally ended a long wait to win on the DP World Tour by winning the European Masters.

Wallace held his nerve on a playoff hole to make birdie and hold off the brilliant Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, who had rallied to send things to a deciding hole.

However, a fine wedge shot in from 100 yards to around 5 feet left Wallace with an uphill putt and after Garcia-Heredia had missed his birdie effort, Wallace confidently rolled in to win it.

Of course, Wallace is hoping to make the Ryder Cup team in 2025 and had spoken all weekend about simply impressing Luke Donald.

Wallace now has a good start in terms of points to qualify for Bethpage and he will know he’s likely to need to qualify automatically to make the cut.

If he does indeed make the team, Wallace will be a popular pick and it seems he is a popular man among the golfing fans as well, especially some big name fans.

Matt Wallace takes the plaudits as he wins the European Masters

As we know, golf is one of the most followed sports in the world and athletes from around the world love to play and watch.

And after posting on Instagram about his win, Wallace had some big names offer up their congratulations.

Among the high profile names to send messages of thanks were England and Arsenal midfielder, Declan Rice, who joined the likes of Iona Stephen in sending well-wishes.

Then, in a separate post shortly after, more big names like John Terry, Piers Morgan, and even Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston himself offered up their congrats to Wallace.

Ryder Cup dream is on for Matt Wallace

Wallace spoke openly and honestly after his win here and it’s safe to say he seems like a man who is determined to get into Luke Donald’s thinking.

The Englishman looks very much ready to make a big case for being picked and if he can play like he has this weekend, then he might make the decision easier anyway.

Wallace is going to get chances to earn points across the DP and PGA Tours and that is a huge bonus for him.

Yes, we fully expect the likes of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood to be in New York.

But Wallace, on this form and in this mindset, could cause a bit of a stir and force himself into what is a very settled and talented European Team.
