While the PGA Tour season might have finished across the pond, things are very much still alive over in Europe ahead of a Ryder Cup year in 2025.

Team Europe will go to Bethpage in New York looking to defend their title from Rome where they effectively hammered the Americans into submission.

Luke Donald’s troops are not expected to change too much going over to America but there are obvious qualification spots up for grabs, as well as those captain’s picks.

Of course, a year is a long time in golf and anything can happen.

One man looking to make an impression on Donald and Team Europe is 34-year-old Englishman, Matt Wallace.

Wallace is still ticking his season over and currently leads the Omega European Masters by four strokes heading into the weekend.

And while winning is important to Wallace, he’s admitted his main focus is to impress captain Donald and get into contention for Bethpage.

Matt Wallace admits he’s playing to impress, not just to win

Speaking after another bogey-free round at the Omega on Friday, Wallace admitted that his focus right now is on playing well.

And with that, he hopes a nod from Donald will come.

“It’s not just about the win, it’s playing well,” he said (BBC).

“Luke [Donald, Ryder Cup captain] wants you to play well and I want to play well so I’m going to try to play well every single day and what comes from it comes from it.

“It is good, competition, but I want to get away from the competition as much as possible.”

Wallace has won one event on the PGA Tour but hasn’t won on the DP World Tour for six years now.

With Alex Fitzpatrick his closest contender just behind him on 10-under, Wallace will feel he’s a real chance to end that barren run.

And if he does, then he’ll be firmly on Donald’s radar heading into 2025.
