Jim Furyk has named the crucial moment at the Presidents Cup that potentially turned the tide in the United States’ favour.
Furyk was criticised before the event for picking Max Homa, Keegan Bradley, and Brian Harman, who had all struggled for form on the PGA Tour.
However, the 54-year-old’s calls paid off, as the United States won 18.5-11.5 at Royal Montreal Golf Club. Furyk has been praised by Kevin Kisner as the US vice-captain highlighted the extensive work that went into the lead-up to the Presidents Cup.
Presidents Cup: Jim Furyk names ‘key’ Patrick Cantlay moment

Furyk is now hosting the Constellation Furyk and Friends tournament on the Champions Tour just days after the Presidents Cup triumph.
Unsurprisingly, the American couldn’t escape questioning about the USA’s win, and Furyk was quick to highlight Patrick Cantlay’s putt on the 18th during Saturday evening’s foursomes.
“They were gutsy and just a tough team down the stretch. So, that 3-1 start Saturday morning was key. And then all the matches in the afternoon were important,” Furyk explained.
“But walking up on the last match, I got Pat and X out there, two of the toughest players. We have, and we go into Sunday with a two-point lead. If they lose that hole, we can go in with a three, four point lead. If they halve that hole, four-point lead if they win that hole.”
Furyk continued: “And Pat had a good drive. Spun that wedge back. Went into the hole and Pat fashioned a key putt for us.
“That’s a big difference; two points lead going into Sunday versus a three is huge; four is even bigger. That was a very key moment in the matches. I think gave our team a big boost.”
Patrick Cantlay: The United States star man at the Presidents Cup
Cantlay was the United States’ star man during the Presidents Cup, ending the event with a 4-1 record. The only match the American lost came against an inspired pairing of Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im during Friday’s foursomes.
The 32-year-old’s performance at Royal Montreal wasn’t surprising. Cantlay earned vital points at the 2023 Ryder Cup whilst being the target for the majority of the European crowd.
As preparation for the 2025 event at Bethpage Black begins, Cantlay will probably be Keegan Bradley’s third name on the teamsheet behind Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler.
“They don’t hand out this award, but MVP of the Presidents Cup for me was Patrick Cantlay,” said journalist Dan Rapaport. “All five sessions, 4-1 record, huge shots in the most important moments.”
