PGA Tour chief Jay Monahan has been told why he’s the biggest disappointment of the 2024 season as talks with the Public Investment Fund continue.

Over a year has passed since the groundbreaking framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF, the financial arm of LIV Golf. The alliance would see a rumoured $1 billion investment into the PGA Tour from the Saudis.

However, since the December 31 deadline, false dawns have emerged at every corner. During the Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy outlined his desire for unification.

However, Monahan says no new deadline has been set, and the PGA Tour 2025 schedule has already been announced, which could indicate an agreement is a long way off. Fresh PGA-PIF talks took place last week, although it’s unclear whether there has been a breakthrough.

Golf Channel pundit Rex Hoggard has been at the forefront of the PGA-PIF saga and provided regular updates.

Hoggard has shared what could happen after the latest round of talks as the PIF and PGA representatives return home.

Unsurprisingly, the Golf Channel pundit is far from impressed with Monahan’s involvement and left a scathing review of the PGA Tour chief during his latest podcast.

“The person on the list who is going to win the award [biggest disappointment] is Jay Monahan for the reasons that Rory voiced just two weeks ago at East Lake,” Hoggard explained. “If you are a golf fan, you should still feel aggravated about how many months down the road it has been since the June 6 framework announcement. Maybe all of the blame shouldn’t go on his shoulders.”

Hoggard continued: “The idea when they announced the framework agreement was to reunite the game and do away with all the distractions. To a certain degree, that happened. However, we are still talking about it, and it’s odd that you and I agree that the US Open was the best event of the year.

“And that’s no coincidence that it happened to be Rory and Bryson going head to head. You still have many of the game’s top players on that side.

“Everything else, after the majors, becomes irrelevant, and I am talking about both products. You can’t make a legitimate argument that if you win a Signature Event, you’ve beaten the best field. That bothers them, and it’s time for Jay Monahan and the PIF side to put an end to this, one way or another.”

PGA Tour-PIF end could be near

The latest round of talks could indicate that a conclusion is close. With the PGA Tour season over and the LIV campaign drawing to a close, the off-season feels like the right time for an agreement to be thrashed out.

Furthermore, some players appear to be taking matters into their own hands.

McIlroy’s upcoming match against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau could well be a signal of intent from superstars on either side.

Furthermore, several LIV players are set to compete on the DP World Tour, which could force the hand of those making the critical decisions at the top of the game.
