Rory McIlroy has once again been discussing the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s financial arm, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

The Northern Irishman is never far away from the LIV Golf discourse, and McIlroy was linked with a blockbuster LIV move immediately after the Masters.

Of course, the four-time major champion refuted the claims. The Northern Irishman has always been a staunch PGA Tour loyalist since the emergence of LIV. Despite this, McIlroy is open to the PGA Tour collaborating with LIV in the coming years.

Now, at the Tour Championship, McIlroy has reiterated what needs to happen in order for golf to develop further.

Jay Monahan hasn’t set a new deadline with the PIF, and McIlroy believes an end goal – with the two sides coming together – is what fans need.

During an interview with Golf.com, McIlroy insisted that reunification would bring a higher ceiling.

“Yeah. I mean, I was on the wrong end of it, but look at the numbers that Bryson and I did at Pinehurst,” McIlroy explained.

“That’s what needs to happen. [LIV] have a lot of the personalities, you know. The PGA Tour, I mean, we’re here trying to create the best product. You need villains; otherwise, it can get flat.”

The PGA Tour must take note as Rory McIlroy demands change

When McIlroy – who is one of LIV’s most prominent critics – is suggesting reintegration should take place, Monahan must stand up and listen.

Despite all of LIV’s flaws, the breakaway league has some of the game’s biggest characters, who can garner the interest of fans around the world.

The four major championships cannot be the only events where all the best players congregate. This scenario must change.

Yet, with the PGA Tour announcing its schedule, any chance of LIV players being invited back onto the traditional circuit feels unlikely unless the current standoff reaches a shock conclusion in the coming months.
