Hayden Springer stole the headlines on day one of the John Deere Classic after carding a historic 59 – and the 27-year-old has now shed light on his brilliant first round at TPC Deere Run.

After heading out in 27, Springer appeared to have squandered the chance of a 59 after carding six pars on his back nine.

However, a hole out on the 17th and a birdie on the 18th saw the American make PGA Tour history and become only the 14th man to achieve the feat.

Elsewhere, Jordan Spieth, who insisted he was going to attack the course, finished on two under and faces a battle to make the cut.

It was a similar story for Jason Day, who also sits ten shots back. The Aussie’s prediction about a low-scoring affair certainly rang true.

Speaking after his round at TPC Deere Run, Springer claimed his impressive recent form was down to being more intelligent with his practice sessions.

“Just been trying to practice, practice a little smarter and manage my time and energy a little better,” he explained.

The 27-year-old also admitted that spending time with an old coach had made a significant difference.

“Also, I was able to go back and see an old coach of mine that helped me tremendously,” he added. “Getting back to some stuff we know works, and it’s starting to pay off.”

Hayden Springer could boost FedEx Cup hopes this week

Springer could do his FedEx Cup aspirations a world of good after his first round at TPC Deere Run. The world 236 has put himself firmly in contention and could now massively improve his current FedEx Cup ranking ahead of the end-of-season playoffs, which get underway at the St. Jude Championship in six weeks.

With several big names fighting to make the top 70, a win at TPC Deere Run could be career-changing for Springer.

Looking ahead, the John Deere Classic is the start of a busy three-week stretch of golf, with the Scottish Open and The Open Championship to come over the next 14 days.

A large number of the field competing in Illinois are set to head directly to Edinburgh after this week’s event. In fact, a unique travel arrangement has been made, which Spieth has admitted he’s a massive fan of.
