Rory McIlroy’s victory at The Masters earlier this year was one of the greatest moments in golf, if not sports history.

Whether or not McIlroy would finally win the Green Jacket and complete the career Grand Slam had been the biggest storyline at Augusta National for several years.

So, it was only fitting that the Northern Irishman achieved it in the most dramatic way, with so many world-class and amateur-ish shots along the way.

He eventually outlasted Justin Rose with a birdie in the playoff hole, and millions of fans around the world rejoiced.

Four-time major champion Ernie Els seems to have been among those, as he shared how he felt watching McIlroy during the final round at The Masters.

Ernie Els gives ‘amazing’ verdict on Rory McIlroy’s Masters victory

Els discussed McIlroy’s incredible Masters win on Sky Sports during the break in play on day four at the US Open.

The two-time Masters runner-up (2000 and 2004) shared that he “watched every shot on Sunday” at Augusta.

He also explained that he was “really happy” to see McIlroy achieve his lifelong dream after such a crazy tournament.

“Amazing,” Els said. “I was watching every shot on Sunday. Everything he did was on a needle. When he chipped it into the water on 13, I ran out of the television room. I couldn’t believe that.

“But I was really happy for him. Justin Rose has got to get a shout-out, too, because he played great golf. He was wonderful.”

Ernie Els comments on Rory McIlroy’s US Open final round

McIlroy’s form since winning The Masters has gone downhill. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship and only narrowly made it at the US Open.

But after three underwhelming rounds at Oakmont Country Club, the 25-year-old stepped up his game and produced a three-under 67.

“Yeah. It’s great to see. He’s got a bit of a spring in his step,” Els said as McIlroy worked towards an unlikely top 20 finish at Oakmont.

“I actually just flew in this morning from Florida and saw his airplane standing there on the tarmac, so he’s ready to go somewhere after this, with a good round.”
