Rory McIlroy’s post-Masters struggles continued at the US Open as he only just made the cut and never looked like contending.

McIlroy was two under par through nine holes in his first round, and it looked as if major championship number six was on the cards.

He then made four bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine to finish four over, immediately putting himself on the back foot.

A 72 in round two and a 74 on Saturday left him in no position to contend, but he did shoot a 67 on Sunday to climb into the top 30.

And there was another positive for McIlroy at the US Open. He excelled in one area despite a disappointing performance overall.

What Rory McIlroy did extremely well at the US Open

McIlroy’s driving was particularly impressive this week, which is more significant than many will realize.

McIlroy is widely regarded as the greatest driver of all time, so one could argue that it’s no surprise to see him excel off the tee.

Well, he has actually struggled with the club numerous times this season. Most recently, he drove the ball poorly at the PGA Championship and Canadian Open.

By contrast, McIlroy gained 1.54 strokes off the tee at Oakmont. This puts him firmly in the top three, alongside Chris Gotterup and Adam Scott.

So, the world number two should take huge confidence from his improved driving into next week’s Travelers Championship and the Open Championship at Portrush.

Rory McIlroy gives verdict on his driving after final round at US Open

McIlroy was asked about his driving in his post-round press conference on Sunday, and his verdict was clear.

“I feel like I’ve driven the ball well all week,” he said. “After the way I drove it today, I’d say I finished in the top five in strokes gained off the tee. Really encouraged with the driver and how I drove it as well.

“It’s not necessarily the driver; it’s more me, and sort of where my swing was. I feel like I got a really good feeling in my swing with the driver, which was great. Hopefully, I can continue that into next week.

“Yeah, it’s close, as I said. Physically, I feel like my game’s there. It’s just mentally getting myself in the right frame of mind to get the best out of myself.”

It’s good to hear that McIlroy is feeling upbeat after a difficult US Open, as it bodes well for his chances at upcoming tournaments.
