Justin Thomas will be one of many golfers looking to win The Masters in a week’s time but ahead of Augusta, he’s given naming his ideal golfer a go.

It’s one of golf’s common questions to players and something fans can debate until the end of time in terms of taking bits from different players to build the perfect golfer.

With so many players across so many different eras, the professionals in the game are generally going to have a different opinion based on who they’ve seen the most and played alongside.

Indeed, for Justin Thomas, when it comes to building his perfect golfer, he’s gone for some modern greats.

Justin Thomas builds his perfect golfer including Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth

Thomas has been speaking on an episode of Throwbacks on YouTube ahead of The Masters and got onto the subject of the perfect golfer.

And for Thomas, it’s all about the modern players, including his good friends Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.

“Driving I am going Rory for sure,” Thomas said.

“Clutch I am going prime Tiger. Putting is tough, because I want to do that too, but statistically Denny McCarthy is an unreal putter year after year after year.

“Patrick Reed has one of the sickest short games I have ever seen. I have watched him get up and down from so many different places. But it is hard to go against Jordan. I have played more rounds with him, so I have seen it more than I have with P Reed or Phil [Mickelson], but I can never bet against Jordan so I will go with his.”

Rory McIlroy’s career driving stats show why Justin Thomas picks him

When you look at the modern golfer, you cannot look past Rory McIlroy when it comes to being able to bomb the ball down the fairway.

Sure, some on the PGA Tour are longer and Bryson DeChambeau is an outlier in terms of world golf.

But over a consistent period, Rory McIlroy has always excelled with driver.

McIlroy averaged 320.2 yards off the tee with the big stick in 2024 and although that is a drop from the year prior at 326.3, it is McIlroy’s consistency that is impressive.

The four-time major winner has not dropped below a 310 yard average with driver since way back in 2015. That shows the dedication to constantly improve and add distance and while technology helps, McIlroy has shown his class.

In fact, since coming to the PGA Tour, McIlroy has never averaged under 300 yards.
