Rory McIlroy won The Masters on Sunday and subsequently entered the extremely exclusive Grand Slam club as a result.

Michael Kim was hugely impressed by the Northern Irishman’s performance around Augusta National, but one thing in particular about his final round stood out to him.

Sunday was Rory McIlroy‘s 16th attempt at winning The Masters. The fifth major win was a long time coming for McIlroy, but boy was that wait worth it in the end.

After his round, Rory McIlroy admitted that he took inspiration from Jon Rahm’s Masters win in 2023, after he double bogied his first hole of the day.

The thing that made Rory’s win so special was the sheer volume of his fellow pros who took to social media to congratulate him.

He really is a hugely popular figure on the PGA Tour, arguably the most popular.

It was a decent tournament for Michael Kim.

In only his second Masters, Kim finished in a tie for 27th – a very respectable performance indeed.

The 31-year-old American has a huge presence and following on social media.

He has become somewhat of a cult hero amongst fans over the past year or so due to his great insight into life on tour.

Kim posted a message on his official X account on Monday afternoon.

And he shared how he could not quite believe something that McIlroy did around Augusta National on Sunday:

Augusta Diaries (Sun) – What a freaking tournament. I still can’t believe some of the shots that Rory hit good and bad. The brain is a crazy thing and can make you do crazy things. Super stoked for him as he genuinely is a good guy. It’s great that he finally got this King Kong off his back.

Not the perfect finish but I was still able to play a decent round to shoot 1 under 71. I was able to play a really good front nine but fizzled a bit on the back. -I got off to a good start -2 thru 3 holes. I know I’ve said this before but playing this course with the Sunday pin locations that we all know and love is such a cool feeling. The shots are ones you’ve seen for yrs and I was able to pull off many of them.

I wish I was able to play 13 14 15 a little better. Those are three birdie opportunities if you can pull off the shots but I just wasn’t able to execute them properly.

It’s so interesting when the scores go up on leaderboards. When the first hole was posted by Rory there was such a groan and then a big cheer when he made his birdies. It was definitely a pro Rory crowd over Bryson.

This won’t be the last Augusta themed post so keep an eye out for some other stuff.

Thanks for following my Augusta diaries, especially those that mentioned it to me in person this week and I hope to do it next yr too!

Rory McIlroy tied 90-year record at The Masters

The 35-year-old now sits at the very top table of golfing greats.

He’s now completed the Grand Slam, and if he manages to tuck away a few more majors, he will go down as one of the top 10 greatest golfers of all-time.

Rory McIlroy actually made history at The Masters on Sunday.

In winning at Augusta National, he became the first player to complete the Grand Slam at The Masters since Gene Sarazen did it way back in 1935.

What a win it was for Rory. Now is the time for his to really kick on and cement his legacy as one of the greats of the game.
