Golf fans have been looking forward to the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black for months, and it’s now only one week away.

The United States and European teams are both made up of world-class talent from top to bottom, which should lead to a fascinating competition.

However, sports fans always want more entertainment, and the Ryder Cup’s current structure could be improved.

Former PGA Tour players Colt Knost and Johnson Wagner have suggested a change to the singles matches for extra drama.

Colt Knost and Johnson Wagner want more drama in Ryder Cup singles matches

As it stands, the two Ryder Cup captains decide who will play and which match they will play in, but not their opponents.

Colt Knost has suggested that the captains should be allowed to match up their players with the opponents they want to compete against.

“When you throw out a guy or a team, the other captain should come back and match it,” Knost argued.

“How good would it be to see Scottie Sheffler and Rory McIlroy in a crucial match on Sunday in the singles? I just think that’s a no-brainer.”

Johnson Wagner was in full agreement with the idea because it would make for excellent television that the fans would be excited to see.

“I would love to see that,” he replied. “The only question would be, is that too much pressure to put on one guy? It’s a lot. But I think Scottie Sheffller could handle it?

“As far as the pairings go, absolutely. I think that it would be great TV drama. I would love to see them throw out a pairing, then like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re going to stick Xander [Schauffele] and [Patrick] Cantlay against these guys because of their head-to-head record.'”

Three singles matches Ryder Cup fans would love to see

If Knost and Wagner’s idea came to fruition, there would be much more strategy involved than picking the matches the fans want to see.

However, here are three singles matches that we believe would be great to watch on Sunday at Bethpage Black.

Rivalries in golf are few and far between, but Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau do not see eye to eye after their recent battles.

DeChambeau beat McIlroy to win the US Open last year, but the Northern Irishman got revenge at this year’s Masters. We would love to watch them go head-to-head again at the Ryder Cup.

Excluding those two, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm are clearly the two best players at the 2025 Ryder Cup.

They also represent the ongoing PGA Tour vs LIV Golf rivalry, adding another interesting element to their potential battle.

Finally, Patrick Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava antagonized the European players two years ago in Rome by waving his hat on the 18th green.

While McIlroy was more involved, Shane Lowry later stepped in to defend his good friend in a heated argument in the parking lot. Neither team will have forgotten the incident, so why not reignite the fire?
