The infamous spat between Joe LaCava and Rory McIlroy during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome went down in folklore as one of the most heated exchanges ever witnessed throughout the competition’s 98-year history.
McIlroy partnered up with Matt Fitzpatrick at the Ryder Cup in the afternoon four-balls on Saturday against United States duo Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark.
The Northern Irishman was involved in a confrontation with Cantlay’s caddie, LaCava, on the 18th green at Marco Simone Golf Club.
McIlroy has admitted how much the incident with LaCava at the Ryder Cup angered him, and actually fired him and his teammates up even more so to go out and get the job done on Sunday.
Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir suggested that Cantlay was not wearing a cap in protest to not being paid to play at the Ryder Cup.

As a result, the European fans at Marco Simone mocked the American throughout the week, by waving their caps in his direction.
After Cantlay holed his putt on the 18th, McIlroy was faced with a putt for the half, but the Northern Irishman felt that LaCava, who was waving his hat in response to the European fans who were doing the same, celebrated for far too long and got too close to him as he was reading his line.
LaCava, a hardened New Yorker, was never going to back down as tensions quickly escalated with adrenaline pumping on both sides.
But how did European captain Luke Donald view the incident?
How Luke Donald reacted after Joe LaCava and Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup feud in 2023
McIlroy actually accosted Justin Thomas’ caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay in the parking lot after the Saturday afternoon four-ball matches to complain about La Cava’s behaviour.
With tempers frayed, McIlroy was seen shouting in Mackay’s direction and at one point, Shane Lowry had to get involved in order to prevent the situation spiralling even further out of control.
Donald spoke to reporters after the round and responded when asked to share his thoughts on what happened between McIlroy and LaCava.
The European Ryder Cup captain said: “Rory was upset, quite rightfully, and these things happen at the Ryder Cup.
“It’s a passionate event. Joe overstepped the mark and tried to reach out after the fact and apologise but we just tried to use that as fuel for Sunday.

“I didn’t need to say much.”
Europe dominated the United States in Rome. The score was 10.5-5.5 after the close of Saturday’s play and that proved to be too much of a mountain to climb for the visitors.
The final score was 16.5-11.5 in Europe’s favour, and the McIlroy / LaCava incident on Saturday only served to galvanise the home team.
Joe LaCava apologised to Rory McIlroy after Ryder Cup incident
LaCava acted inappropriately in the heat of the moment on day two of the Ryder Cup in Rome three years ago.
However, he clearly realised the error of his ways.
Bob Harig took to X back in 2023 to share a report from NBC saying that LaCava had apologized to McIlroy and the European team.
He said: “NBC reporting that Joe reached out to Rory and European team last night to clear the air and that he met with Rory this morning to apologize and get last night’s incident behind them going into final day.“
Fair play to LaCava for owning his mistake and apologizing to McIlroy and the rest of the European team.
A lot of people in the professional game could learn from how the 70-year-old acted in the aftermath of the incident.
