It’s been a whirlwind two years for Aussie star Cameron Smith, who is now thriving in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League.

Smith is loving life on LIV and helped steer his Ripper GC quartet to Team Championship glory in Dallas in September. Given the 31-year-old’s success since joining in August 2022, few breakaway league players are likely happier with their decision to quit the PGA Tour.

Smith’s attention has now turned to the LIV trading season, with there now a plethora of Aussie talent desperate to join Ripper. However, with Matt Jones set to sign a new deal, the young prodigies from down under may have to wait.

This week, Smith is competing in the PIF Saudi International series, and some intriguing quotes have emerged from the 2022 Open Championship winner.

During an interview with Bunkered, Smith revealed that he misses a couple of PGA Tour events. “There’s a couple (PGA Tour events) I would like to play, but I’m very happy out here, to be honest,” the 31-year-old said.

“That mindset for me has been and gone. I was happy coming over and making this tour the best it can be. I really enjoy my time in Australia and playing a couple extra events this year was pretty cool. I made my bed and I’m very happy to sleep in it.”

Smith also reacted to rumours surrounding Adam Scott moving LIV, although the Ripper GC captain remained coy on the speculation.

Latest on LIV Golf-PGA Tour merger

Smith’s comments on the PGA Tour come as the PIF continue discussions on a potential reunification with golf’s top decision-makers.

If a merger did occur and the divide within the game came to a close, there’s every chance the Aussie would be able to play some of the events he previously loved participating in.

So, what’s the latest on the ongoing talks? Last month, bombshell reports from the UK suggested the PGA and PIF were nearing a $1bn agreement. The deal would have seen the Saudis gain seats on the PGA Tour board, including a chairmanship position.

However, over a month has passed, and with speculation swirling about PGA Tour players potentially leaving, the reported conclusion seems far off. The latest twist, which emerged last week, saw the PIF focus their attention on the DP World Tour, with negotiations between the two parties ongoing.

With PGA Tour negotiations at a standstill, the Saudis may find a resolution with the Wentworth-based tour more likely.
