Elvis Smylie probably could not have dreamt of a better way to win for the first time on the DP World Tour, with the youngster edging out Cam Smith in the final round of the BMW Australian PGA Championship.
Heading into the final round of the BMW Australian PGA Championship, fans may have assumed that the stage was set for Cam Smith to win in front of his home fans. The 2022 Open champion was tied for the lead.
Meanwhile, Ripper GC teammate Marc Leishman was two shots back of the lead. So you may have assumed that there was enormous pressure on Elvis Smylie – the 22-year-old who was tied with Smith at the summit at Royal Queensland.
But Smylie flew out of the blocks. He made four birdies in the first seven holes of the final round. Meanwhile, Smith was much more erratic, making four birdies and three bogeys on the front nine.

And with that, the youngster was able to get the job done – winning by two. And speaking on The Chipping Forecast, Smylie explained what the experience of playing alongside Smith and Leishman was like.
“Both Cam and Leish were absolute superstars to play the last day with. They were cheering me on, and every time I did something, they would always say that was absolutely class, that was really good. You couldn’t have had two nicer blokes to play a final round of an Australian PGA with,” he said.

“Exclude everything they’ve done in the game of golf, if you just put Cameron Smith there, just the person, and Marc Leishman there, the person, you’re just playing a round of golf with them, they’re honestly two of the nicest people you’d meet.
“And to be in their presence and have that support off them, even though they’re trying to chase me down and do what they can to take the title away from me, they were just super supportive. It’s a day I’ll never forget for sure.”
An even more significant victory
Smith and Leishman would have recognised just how important the tournament was to Smylie. Obviously, the pair would have wanted to win, particularly in Australia. However, they have secured some big victories in their careers, with Smith winning the Claret Jug at St Andrews two years ago.
Plus Smith and Smylie have known each other for some time. And given how the two LIV Golf players conducted themselves in that final round, Smylie’s win will have been even more special.
