Golf is arguably the most complex sport on the planet, so it is hardly surprising that there are so many common misconceptions.

Whether it’s unhelpful coaching advice or misguided fan opinions, golf discourse often strays far from reality.

Well, PGA Tour winner Brandel Chamblee has now taken it upon himself to tell the truth about professional golfers.

He pointed out two things people get wrong about Tour players, and the statistics certainly back him up.

Brandel Chamblee says what people get wrong about PGA Tour players

One of the biggest talking points in professional golf at the moment is distance because players are hitting it further than ever before.

In some cases, the likes of Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau overpower golf courses that were not designed for 300-plus yard drives.

However, Chamblee is keen to let fans know that those players are still outliers and that you do not need to have incredibly high ball speed and be able to drive over 300 yards to be successful.

“It’s just not true that one has to be among the longest hitters to make it on the PGA Tour,” Chamblee explained.

“The average ball speed ranking of the current TOP 10 IN THE WORLD is 178.2, or just a little better than the tour average.

“Nor is it true that the majority of PGA Tour players carry the ball 300+ yards. The average carry distance on the PGA Tour is 286.4 yards.

“Indeed, only 15 players have an average carry distance of 300 yards or more on the PGA Tour.”

Brian Campbell proves Brandel Chamblee’s point about PGA Tour players

Brian Campbell is the shortest hitter on the PGA Tour this season. He drives the ball 276.6 yards on average.

Now, many would assume that he must struggle to compete with the best players in the world due to his obvious limitation.

However, Campbell has actually won two PGA Tour events in 2025: the John Deere Classic and the Mexico Championship.

Although those aren’t the biggest events, he, McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Sepp Straka, Ben Griffin, and Ryan Fox are the only Tour players to win twice or more this season.
