Billy Horschel was back to his best at The Open Championship, finishing T2 and two shots back of eventual winner Xander Schauffele.
The American has been on the periphery of things in recent years but has bounced back into form in 2024, sealing one win and currently sitting 26th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Despite his excellent showing at Royal Troon, Horschel was forced to respond to online criticism after the final round.
Horschel was meant to appear at this week’s 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, Blaine, Minnesota. However, the eight-time PGA Tour event winner has pulled out, and here’s why.
Billy Horschel offers apology after pulling out of 3M Open

Taking on X on Thursday, Horschel revealed that he’s been suffering from a fever. After trying to warm up, the 37-year-old accepted that he wouldn’t be able to compete.
“Unfortunately, had to withdraw from @3MOpen,” Horschel wrote on X. “Woke up with a fever, body aches, and back just locked up. Tried to warm up and give it a go but body just wouldn’t let it happen. Really disappointed to WD as my family and I enjoyed it here last year, and we were hoping to improve.”
Horschel went on to apologise further for his absence.
“On a T-12 finish from last year. Sorry to 3M and everyone involved with the event,” he added. “Apologise to the fans as well. Thank you for all the support the last couple days while I was out preparing for this week. Once again, I’m sorry!!”

After his brilliant performance at Royal Troon, Horschel is right to feel disappointed. There was a genuine chance for him to pick up his second win of the season and build on his major championship performance from last week.
Now, the American’s attention will turn to the Wyndham Championship, which is the last regular PGA Tour event before the end-of-season playoffs take centre stage.
Tony Finau is the main attraction at this week’s 3M Open, which began on Thursday, July 25. The world number 19 sits T14 after round one after carding a four-under 67.
Before the event, Finau lauded the 3M Open’s influence and highlighted its importance on the PGA Tour schedule.
