Tony Finau has shared what he has found ‘incredible’ since the 3M Open was added to the PGA Tour calendar, as he also made a claim about the field teeing it up this week.
Tony Finau is undoubtedly one of the biggest names set to tee it up at TPC Twin Cities this week, with the world number 19 one of those flying back across the Atlantic to be involved.
Nine of the world’s top 50 will be playing in Minnesota, with Sahith Theegala the highest ranked player in the field. Meanwhile, Billy Horschel will also play after he finished tied for second at The Open Championship after an outstanding week at Royal Troon.
Finau may well be the favourite in the eyes of many having finished in the top 10 at the 3M Open – an event which was first held in 2019 – on two occasions while winning by three back in 2022. The 34-year-old was actually five back with 11 holes to play before going on to seal victory – his third win on the PGA Tour.
Tony Finau excited about 3M Open’s future
The 3M Open has a tough job trying to attract players following a fortnight which includes a Rolex event and a major championship – the Olympics is also just around the corner – but Finau told Golf Channel that the status of the tournament is moving in the right direction.

“Yeah, just as someone being around the tour now 10 years, being a PGA Tour member for 10 years, I know how important every golf tournament is. To help this tournament grow in the little way that I have, it’s been an incredible thing for me,” he said.
“3M has been great to me, it has a lot to offer to the PGA Tour, and I feel like each year we’ve gotten a better field, this year maybe is our best, and if that trend continues this is going to be a premiere tournament I think for a lot of years on the PGA Tour. I hope that’s the case, again I’ll be here to support it no matter what.”
Big names have important role to play
Of course, the next couple of events are significant for a large number of players with the FedEx Cup play-offs looming. Many will be looking to push themselves up the standings ahead of the St. Jude Championship in mid-August.
But it is crucial that players such as Finau continue to play at these events, which have not been given signature status. Ultimately, more casual fans are more likely to watch PGA Tour events which include Finau, Theegala and Keegan Bradley, who are bigger names in the game.
It is good news for the 3M Open that Finau appears to have no intention of not coming back anytime soon, so it will be intriguing to see how the tournament does grow in the years to come.
