We all know Luke Donald is a fantastic Ryder Cup captain, but there’s so much more to this legendary European golfer, so let’s dive in.

He’s the man who not only led Europe to a huge victory in Rome in 2023, but also secured a Ryder Cup win away from home at Bethpage Black in 2025.

Luke Donald could retire from golf today and already be certain that his name will be revered forever after what he’s achieved in the last few years.

Indeed, there is widespread belief Donald won’t continue as Ryder Cup captain. He could leave on a high now and who could blame him?

But, with two years to go until Adare 2027, we’ve got plenty of time to learn all about Luke Donald, from his golfing record to his personal life, and how much money he’s earned during his career.

Luke Donald age

Luke Donald is currently 47-years-old. He was born on December 7, 1977 in Hemel Hempstead, England.

Luke Donald height and weight

Standing at 1.75 metres tall, Luke Donald is a fairly average-sized man, roughly equating to just under 5ft 9in. He weighs 73kg.

Luke Donald world ranking

In terms of Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), Luke Donald is way down in 1075th place at the moment. That figures, really, given he barely plays events anymore.

He actually started the year ranked at 599, but of the 11 events he has played in 2025, Donald missed the cut at ten of them. The only time he won any ranking points in 2025 was at the PGA Championship, where he finished T60.

It’s safe to say Donald’s best golfing years, as a player, are behind him. But, he was once world number one, back in 2011 and 2012. He spent 55 weeks in the top spot, after winning events like the BMW Championship, the Scottish Open, and the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.

Donald was crowned PGA Player of the Year (the first Englishman to earn that honour) and European Tour Golfer of the Year for 2011.

Luke Donald net worth and career earnings

As per Celebrity Net Worth, Luke Donald is currently worth around $40 million.

In that golden period when Donald ascended to the top of the OWGR, he earned $6.7 million in 2011 and a further $3.5 million in 2012.

It is thought Donald’s total career earnings on the PGA Tour stand at $37.71 million.

Over the years, Donald has had sponsorship deals with Mizuno (wearing his Mizuno visor was worth $1 million alone, apparently), Jordan, Zurich Insurance, Polo Ralph Lauren, and most recently, Greyson Clothiers (the same apparel company that collaborate with Legion XIII on the LIV Golf circuit).

Luke Donald’s perfect Ryder Cup record as a player

As a player, Luke Donald has made four appearances for Team Europe at the Ryder Cup, and he’s lifted the trophy every single time.

Donald was one of Bernhard Langer’s captain’s picks in 2004 at Oakland Hills, and ended up recording a 2-1-1 as Europe stormed to an 18½ to 9½ victory.

He qualified for the team again in 2006 and registered a brilliant 3-0-0 record as Europe again clinched the trophy with the same scoreline at K Club.

Interestingly, Donald missed out in 2008, and Europe would go on to lose the tournament for the first time since 1999.

YearIndividual recordPercentage of points won
20122-2-050%
20103-1-075%
20063-0-0100%
20042-1-162.5%

Donald was a captain’s pick for Colin Montgomerie in 2010, though, registering a 3-1-0 as Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup with a narrow 14½-13½ victory.

His final appearance as a player came in 2012 at Medinah, having qualified for the team. Donald went 2-2-0 as Europe again edged the USA with a 14½-13½ scoreline.

Overall, Donald won 70% of the points he competed for in the four tournaments. That’s higher than the likes of Jon Rahm (61.8%) and Rory McIlroy (56.6%), and more even than his good friend Justin Rose (60.3%).

Legendary Ryder Cup captain

Luke Donald has written himself into the history books as one of the best Ryder Cup captains ever. With his two wins in 2023 and 2025, Donald joins the rather exclusive club of captains who have won back-to-back, including the likes of Tony Jacklin (1985 and 1987) and Ben Hogan (1947 and 1949).

In 2025, Donald made just one change to his team, swapping out Nicolai Hojgaard for his twin brother, Rasmus. That momentum was key for Europe, but Donald also made the genius move of switching up the pairings for the event almost wholesale compared to two years prior.

Many have commended Donald’s decision to select Matt Fitzpatrick, while Justin Rose hailed Donald’s leadership qualities, especially compared to how introverted he was as a player.

In 2023, Europe stormed to a 16½-11½ win, with Rory McIlroy the star man. In 2025, it was Tommy Fleetwood who led the European charge. While things looked comfortable heading into the final day, Team USA put up a brilliant fight and it was down to Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton to get Europe over the line for a 15-13 win.

As for continuing as captain, it’s thought Donald will take his time on that decision. Many want Donald to continue his hot streak, but the man himself has been coy about the idea so far.

Luke Donald’s PGA Tour stats

Luke Donald was destined for greatness as soon as he moved over to the United States. Indeed, he won the individual NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships title in 1999, breaking the score record set by none other than Tiger Woods at the time.

He turned professional in 2001 and earned his PGA Tour card a year later. Donald won his first title in 2002, clinching the Southern Farm Bureau Classic.

Over the years, Donald has played 433 events on the Tour, making the cut in 293 of them. He has five PGA Tour wins and a further eight international titles.

Alongside the 2002 Southern Farm Bureau Classic, Donald also won the 2006 Honda Classic, the 2011 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic and the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship in the same year. His last victory on the Tour was the 2012 Transitions Championship.

He’s also won the Dunlop Phoenix twice (2012 and 2013), the BMW PGA Championship twice (2011 and 2012), the Scottish Open, and Masters events in Madrid, Scandinavia, and the Omega European Masters.

Luke Donald’s family

Donald met his wife Diane at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. They got engaged in 2006 and were married in 2007. They have three daughters together, called Elle, Sophia, and Georgina.

His father, Colin, was a pilot and aerial photographer. Colin was actually the son of a scratch golfer himself, and introduced the sport to Luke during family holidays in Spain. Luke Donald’s father died in 2011. His mother, Ann, was a homemaker and has always kept a fairly low profile.
