Luke Donald could go down as the greatest Ryder Cup captain of all time.

He took over Team Europe on short notice before Rome in 2023 and led them to a convincing home victory. Luke Donald then became the second European Ryder Cup captain to win back-to-back with his victory at Bethpage Black

Team Europe were completely prepared to take an away Ryder Cup victory thanks to Donald. Having done the job in Rome and brought 11 of the 12 players from 2023 back for 2025, Donald’s Europe knew exactly what needed to be done to put their players in the best possible position to succeed.

“Two more years” was the cry from players and fans to Donald, as speculation grows about whether he will continue in his role at Adare Manor in 2027. However, if we learned anything from New York, it would be a costly error.

Luke Donald must step down as Ryder Cup captain to continue European continuity

Donald’s experience as captain from Rome was crucial to the team’s success in New York. The players and vice captains trusted him totally. There was no breaking-in period or adjustment to the way he operates. It was just straight to work with one goal in mind.

However, now Europe has achieved one of the most remarkable accomplishments in sport, winning the Ryder Cup away from home. They head to Ireland in two years’ time with home course advantage. Europe should enter the tournament at Adare Manor as favourites, having not lost on home soil since 1993.

Europe has the structure in place to win the Ryder Cup in two years’ time. But after their performance at Bethpage, that shouldn’t be the only thing on their mind. Europe needs to look further into the future, into 2029.

An exhausted-looking Donald wouldn’t commit to another two years as Europe’s captain yet. He’s now dedicated over three years of his life to this team. Even if he does choose to lead at Adare Manor, it’s overwhelmingly likely that it would be his last Ryder Cup.

And if that’s the case, Europe would be kissing goodbye to the continuity that brought them success at Bethpage Black. In Donald’s absence, they would bring a rookie captain to Hazeltine National, with no experience leading the team.

That’s why Europe needs a fresh start in 2027. Bring in a new face to gain experience at Adare Manor. They can learn the roles and responsibilities, earn the trust of the players, and take in the knowledge of past captains, ready to not only win at home, but win away in 2029.

Donald should never be asked to step down. He’s earned the right to control his own destiny. But for team Europe’s longevity, it’s time for the great man to make way for new blood.

Francesco Molinari should be Luke Donald’s successor

Team Europe’s identity is based on continuity. They show respect and learn lessons from those who came before them, and pave the way for future generations to learn from them. That said, what better man to take the reins from Donald than Francesco Molinari

Molinari has played in the Ryder Cup since 2010. In 2018, he became the first European player ever to win all five of his matches, sealing Europe’s victory by defeating Phil Mickelson 4 & 2 in the singles. He can relate to these players in the same way Donald can.

He’s been by Donald’s side as vice captain since 2023 as his trusted right-hand man. He’s been in every meeting and discussion of consequence when it comes to preparing this team for Rome and New York.

His brother, Edoardo Molinari, is the mastermind behind Europe’s success. His statistical analysis produces the best possible pairings in each event, and that allowed Europe to take a commanding lead through two days at Bethpage Black.

Edoardo Molinari is the man who helped create the legendary pairing of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood

If continuity is key, then there’s no better man than Francesco Molinari to lead Europe not only in 2027, but 2029, as they look to retain the Ryder Cup on foreign soil again.
