A question as old as time in golf: How far would the all-time greats hit the ball in the modern era?

According to Gary Player, Ben Hogan was the greatest ball striker ever to pick up a club. Hogan is on the golf Mount Rushmore for many legends of the game, including Jack Nicklaus

Hogan won nine major championships in his career and is one of six men to complete the career grand slam. That feat becomes even more impressive when you consider that he fought in World War II and was involved in a life-threatening car accident before winning six of his majors.

The American still has one of the smoothest swings the sport has ever seen, but as technology has advanced, the biggest drivers in the game, such as Bryson DeChambeau, can hit it far further.

Here, we can show you exactly how much further DeChambeau hits each of his clubs.

Ben Hogan’s stock yardages compared to Bryson DeChambeau

DeChambeau is one of the longest hitters in the game, and once drove the ball 480 yards in a long drive contest in 2021.

But here, we’re looking at Hogan and DeChambeau’s stock yardages only. And below, we can see just how much further the two-time US Open winner hits the ball than Hogan did in the 40s.

Now, it must be noted that DeChambeau plays with different irons than the typical professional. Not only are the shafts all the same length, allowing for a more repeatable swing, but his irons also have less loft than the typical club.

However, none of that applies to DeChambeau’s driver, which he hits nearly 80 yards further than Hogan on average, illustrating just how far technology with the golf ball and clubs has advanced in the last 80 years.

Bryson DeChambeau was inspired by Ben Hogan quote

Hogan was known for his incredible work ethic, which is something Player said he admired about his hero. And it’s something that he also shared with DeChambeau.

DeChambeau is known for his lengthy range sessions, even during tournaments. At the 2025 Masters, the American hit 393 balls at the driving range.

Known as the scientist, DeChambeau is known for his relentless drive to work on his game, and he once said that he learned that from Hogan himself.

He said to Golf.com in 2021, “It was a quote from [Ben] Hogan that I got early in my teens. [Hogan] said, ‘Every day that you’re not working is another day somebody else is getting better than you.’

“And I took that to heart. Ever since then, I’ve always worked every single day as hard as I possibly can.”

He’s a controversial figure, but no one could ever accuse DeChambeau of not working hard. That’s how he’s been able to add such incredible distance to his game.
