The PGA Tour returns this week with the Truist Championship, with both Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele in the field.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is skipping the Truist Championship, but world number two McIlroy and world number three Schauffele are involved.

The Truist Championship is taking place at Philadelphia Cricket Club, having changed from Quail Hollow for this year’s event.

McIlroy emerged victorious last time out, when the PGA Tour tournament was known as the Wells Fargo Championship.

It represents one of two events this week ahead of the PGA Championship, with the Myrtle Beach Classic also in the schedule.

What golf fans have been telling Xander Schauffele about Rory McIlroy winning The Masters

They arrive ahead of the PGA Championship, the second major championship of 2025 after McIlroy triumphed at The Masters last month.

And the latter was referenced when Schauffele was asked for his favourite tournaments that he remembers watching as a fan, with the American saying in his Truist Championship opening press conference: “It would have to be something with Tiger [Woods].

“Watching Tiger live at Torrey Pines is something that comes to mind quickly. Tiger winning The Masters. Tiger winning East Lake.

“Then along the way, there’s been times where I had a few guys that I like out here pulling it off as well. But in terms of the drama factor, it’s been a while since there’s been sort of that much drama, I feel like.

“Everyone I talk to is saying the same thing. It’s like a must watch, what is going to happen thing, you know what I mean? It was unfortunate, obviously, that there had to be a loser there, but it was a cool, cool thing for golf.”

What Xander Schauffele did right after his final round at The Masters

McIlroy’s success at Augusta is certain to live long in the memory of everyone who tuned in, whereby he saw off Justin Rose in a playoff.

Clinching the career grand slam made the victory that bit more sweet, although the nail-biting manner of the win itself was enough to secure its place in golfing history.

Schauffele meanwhile finished T8 at the major championship, having had his early 2025 season disrupted by a rib injury.

But he now has six PGA Tour starts to his name this season, finishing T18 at the RBC Heritage after his top 10 finish at The Masters.

Also asked if he was able to enjoy the action after his final round, and indeed if he found it entertaining, Schauffele said: “Yeah, for sure. Definitely had this need to turn it on.

“I was in the parking lot and doing the sort of classic… you know, some friends and some family there. Everyone wants to take a photo.

“I was like we need to get home and watch the end of this because I don’t know what’s happening. I was definitely a fan in that moment.”
