Sahith Theegala is making his first Presidents Cup appearance, and Xander Schauffele has shared how the rookie has been in the USA’s team room.

Theegala automatically qualified for the 12-man United States Team after enjoying a superb end to the PGA Tour season.

Theegala has admitted he’s nervous ahead of Thursday’s opening fourball match alongside Collin Morikawa against Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott.

Despite the nerves, it appears Theegala has settled into the USA team well.

Schauffele, speaking before Thursday’s first round, shared his thoughts on Theegala and how the 26-year-old has been within the United States ranks.

“I’ve played with Sahith a lot,” Schauffele said. “Him and Gigi are great. They’re a fun addition to the team room. He’s done some funny stuff, too, that’s absolutely cracked me up. There is more stuff I can’t reveal here.

“It’s been cool to get to know them and share the room with them, and it being their first go-around, it’s such a fun experience to be a part of it.”

Theegala will know a positive Presidents Cup will see him in pole position to land a spot in Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup plans, particularly with Bradley also on the team in Montreal.

Despite the pressure, the 26-year-old is looking to embrace the opportunity in front of him this week.

“It’s kind of a take advantage of the position you’re in. It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to put points up for your home country,” Theegala said.

“So I’m going to be really nervous, but I feel like I play some of my best golf when I’m really nervous. So I’m just looking forward to it. I’m going to fully embrace it.”

Given his end-of-season PGA Tour form, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Theegala become a prolific points scorer for Furyk’s team.
