Wyndham Clark has outlined a big mistake he made before the 2023 Ryder Cup, which he’s already avoided as the Presidents Cup draws ever closer.

Clark is part of Jim Furyk’s 12-man United States team after qualifying automatically through the USA’s points system.

The 30-year-old is one of six Presidents Cup players competing at this week’s Procore Championship, where he will try to fine-tune his game ahead of the showdown against Mike Weir’s International side at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

Clark carded a two-under-par round during Thursday’s play in Napa, and the American is pleased to be taking part after failing to participate in the 2023 edition before the Ryder Cup.

Clark’s decision to skip the Procore Championship in 2023 proved ill-thought-out after the USA suffered a crushing defeat in Rome just weeks later.

The American has since admitted that taking time off was a mistake and that he’s now looking to stay sharp ahead of the Presidents Cup.

“Yeah, that’s honestly why I am here [to stay sharp], Clark told the Talk of the Tour Podcast.

“I do love this event, and I’ve played at this event every year of my career other than last year. And that was a mistake on my part.

“I wasn’t prepared as I would’ve liked to have been for the Ryder Cup, so this year, I wanted to make sure I didn’t do that. There’s no better way to stay sharp than playing a PGA Tour event.”

Wyndham Clark joined by two USA stars at Procore Championship

Sahith Theegala and Max Homa have joined Clark at the Procore Championship as the final touches are made to Presidents Cup preparations.

Theegala is in excellent form and coming off a superb performance at the Tour Championship, where he finished third behind Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa.

Homa, however, isn’t in top form and desperately needs to improve his driving ahead of the trip to Quebec at the end of the month.

Homa has been told he must perform, and it’s hard to disagree when the likes of Justin Thomas have been left off Furyk’s USA team.
