After threatening in multiple big events last year, Ludvig Aberg could be set to become a major champion in 2025.

Golf Channel pundit Smylie Kaufman believes Aberg is Scottie Scheffler’s biggest threat at the Masters, and after his second-place finish last year, this is not an outrageous prediction.

Following knee surgery during the off-season, Aberg is back to full fitness and looking to fine-tune his game as the PGA Tour year begins at The Sentry.

Aberg is seven under and in a tie for 29th after 36 holes at the Plantation Course, nine shots back of pacesetter Hideki Matsuyama.

Before Friday’s second round, Kaufman revealed the Swede was showing off his talents on the range.

After hitting a bucket twice in a row, Wyndham Clark and Xander Schauffele offered Aberg a wager should he make a third attempt.

“I was on the practice range walking him warm up [Aberg] and I was actually more so talking to Wyndham and Xander Schauffele,” Kaufman said.

“Ludvig gets there, and his first two shots, he hits that bucket about 50 yards onto the range, and it makes the loudest noise you have ever heard, and he hit it twice in a row. Xander and Wyndham looked at him on the third shot and both said if you hit this one $100 from each of us. He did miss the bucket on the third one, I must say!”

Wyndham Clark in contention at The Sentry

Clark is a player who appears to be trending in the right direction and is firmly in contention at the season opener.

The American is 13 under after carding an impressive 64 at the Plantation Course. The 2023 US Open winner made seven birdies on his back nine to fire himself up the leaderboard and just three shots back of Matsuyama.

Schauffele, however, hasn’t found his top form in Maui just yet. After shooting 72 on Thursday, the two-time major winner only managed to card 70 on Friday. Schauffele will need to replicate his 2019 final round at The Sentry if he’s to contend this weekend.

Following this week’s Signature Event, the PGA Tour will head to the Sony Open before the American Express, Farmers Insurance Open, and AT&T Pro-Am on the West Coast.
