European Ryder Cup star Viktor Hovland has been ruled out until 2025 after suffering an injury setback.

According to Bunkered, the Norwegian won’t participate in the remaining DP World Tour events due to an unspecified injury.

Interestingly, Hovland only has two DP World Tour starts in 2024, which, in normal circumstances, wouldn’t be enough for the 27-year-old to maintain his membership and Ryder Cup eligibility.

Hovland’s situation has emerged at a time when Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are fighting to maintain their tour status.

Rahm has appealed his outstanding fines in order to complete his quota of DP World Tour starts; Hatton faces a similar scenario.

Due to his presence on LIV, Rahm owes over $1 million to the European authorities. The Spaniard, however, has been reluctant to settle his debts.

Hovland, however, will remain eligible for Luke Donald’s team despite only registering two starts.

Per Bunkered’s report, a DP World Tour spokesperson has confirmed Hovland’s will remain available due to his ‘Counting Tournament’ obligation being amended on medical grounds.

Hovland was a vital part of Donald’s team in 2023 and famously beat Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka 9&7 in Rome.

Hovland will be a vital part of Donald’s team next September, and the European Ryder Cup captain will hope the Norwegian can regain his top form.

2024 was far from ideal for Hovland after he split from his swing coach, Joseph Mayo, at the start of the year.

Once Mayo and Hovland reunited, there were signs of life at the PGA Championship. However, inconsistency plagued the 27-year-old during the latter stages of the season.

With Hovland set to take extended time off, looking to get back to basics and what served him so well in 2023 must be the aim.
