Tyrrell Hatton is back at another major championship, with the Englishman now taking on the US Open.

Hatton thinks the rough at Oakmont is ‘mad’, with that part of the course certain to cause plenty of challenges this week.

Around 8-10 over par could be the US Open cut line, with that figure having been +6 the last time the tournament was held at Oakmont.

That was back at the 2016 US Open, when Dustin Johnson emerged victorious as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy missed the cut.

All of those players are in the field at Oakmont once more this week, along with defending champion Bryson DeChambeau.

What happened to Tyrrell Hatton in a US Open practice round at Oakmont

Insight into the practice round of his fellow LIV Golf player Hatton has now emerged from Claude Harmon.

He said on the Son of a Butch with Claude Harmon podcast: “The winner is going to have to make a lot of 15 or 20 footers for pars because if you get out of position here off the tee, I was walking in a practice round and I saw Tyrrell Hatton miss a fairway by five steps.

“It took us almost 10 minutes to find it and when we found it it was so buried he tried to take a lob wedge, made the hardest swing you can possibly make, and maybe advanced the ball three yards. Five at a push.

“And then if you miss the greens you are in really, really deep rough. You could get completely destroyed by the lie that you have got.

“The issue here is that the rough is so thick that you have to be aggressive out of the rough, so you have to be aggressive otherwise the ball is not going to go anywhere and the club is not going to go anywhere.

“So you have to hit these shots around the green complexes here at Oakmont. Your chip shots you are going to have to hit them so hard but the fear is that you hit them so hard it is going to go over the green and you are going to hit another one.

“So the trap and trick is to hit the golf ball hard enough to get it out, you would much rather hit it on the green to 30 or 40 feet, than to not hit it hard enough and not get out of the rough and hit another one. So you are going to see some crazy short game stuff.”

Which LIV Golf players are playing the US Open at Oakmont?

Hatton is one of 14 full-time LIV Golf players taking on the US Open, the third major championship of 2025.

But most eyes in that regard will likely be on DeChambeau, who is looking to become the first US Open winner to defend his title since Brooks Koepka in 2018.

Hatton may, however, be confident of a strong start, having just shot his lowest round of the season with a final round 65 at LIV Golf Virginia.

But Joaquin Niemann outshone him with a final round 63 to win the event, securing his fourth LIV Golf victory of the season.
