Wayne Riley shares why Jordan Spieth went ‘berserk’ at him during round one of the Players

A controversial drop from Rory McIlroy ended up being one of the big talking points of an otherwise stunning round one at The Players for the Northern Irishman.

McIlroy had a superb opening round at TPC Sawgrass and eventually came home in seven under par to lead the tournament alongside Xander Schauffele at that stage.

The course at Sawgrass was playing well for low scoring and McIlroy, along with a number of others, capitalised to post low scores in the earlier rounds.

However, McIlroy’s round wasn’t without incident. He found water off the tee on 18 – having teed off on the back nine – and the was a long delay while trying to work out the drop zone.

McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland were all embroiled in the conversation, as too, it seemed, was Sky Sports analyst, Wayne Riley.

Ever the showman and never one to back away from getting right in the mix, Riley was apparently asked for his opinion on where McIlroy’s ball entered the water.

However, that wasn’t to everyone’s liking, as Jordan Spieth picked up on ‘Radar’s’ reply and wasn’t overly happy, as Riley explained.

“I went over there and they asked me where it crossed for Rory and I just mentioned it and Jordan went berserk at me. He said how do you know Radar, how do you know? Where were you standing? I’m like I’m just looking at them giggling! All I could do is answer the question. Temperamental golfers!,” Riley said on Sky Sports’ live coverage.

McIlroy drop was all a bit of a farce

While the rules of the game have to be respected and Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland were right to get involved and have their say, this went on for far too long.

The PGA Tour has posted an eight minute long video of the whole incident and in reality, it could have solved far quicker.

Poor old Wayne Riley he took a brunt of frustration from Spieth but as usual, laughed it off with his normal element of class.

In the end, this mattered little overall. McIlroy still carded a brilliant round and goes into tomorrow’s second round in big contention for the weekend.
